FAQ's

Start here if you have questions about designing a web site. Please contact us with additional questions you may have.

What influences the cost of a web site?

The cost of your web site will be affected the number of pages you are going to have, the amount of graphic work that is required and the complexity of the site. As well as the cost of the design of the web site there are two other costs to consider - registering your domain name and hosting your site on a web server.
Most good web sites are regularly updated with new information. You should expect that your web site will require some maintenance. It is a good idea to set aside a budget for your updating.

What can I do to reduce the cost of my web site?

Two words: Be Prepared. Have files with the text you want on the page, have a good idea of what the graphics ought to look like, and know what feel you are looking for. The less the designer has to retrace his steps because of a changed idea on your part, the less the price will rise. Likewise, the less time the designer has to spend on mindless typing and retyping of what should be prepared material on your part, the less fat will appear on the bill. The average designer charges by the hour, it doesn't matter if that hour is filled with drudgery or inspired creativity, so minimize the cost by minimizing the drudgery.

How long does it take to design a web site? Your web site design completion time will be determined by

  1. The size of web site you require.

  2. How complex your requirements are.

  3. Our current availability.

When you have gathered together all of your web site information and are ready to begin, we will give you an estimated completion date.

How do I get a web site design cost quote?

If you currently have a web site but want to change the content or the look and feel of it, we will need your URL and details of what your goals and objectives are. If don't have and existing web site, we will require a copy of all the text, graphics and photos that you intend to use.

We will also need the following questions answered.

  1. What are you hopes and expectations for your web site?

  2. Do you have a new or existing company image that you are trying to portray?

  3. Who is your targeted audience?

  4. How much money have you budgeted for your web site?

  5. What is your deadline?

  6. Do you need us to create a logo for you?

  7. Is your text finalized?

Once we have reviewed your requirements, we will provide you with a written quote.

How does the web site design process work?

Developing an effective web site takes careful thought and planning. What you put into the planning stages will ultimately be reflected in the end product. Your future web site is your online advertisement. Careful planning and high quality content will greatly aid in making your web site successful. The following points explain the steps necessary to design your web site:

  1. Tell us about your company
See "How do I get a web site design cost quote?" above. Once we have received this information we will contact you to arrange a meeting via office visit, phone or E-mail.

  2. Collecting Your Materials
Text, print, copy, brochures, products, pictures, product weight & cost... we need it all to get your site going. The more you provide us with, the less spent trying to get the necessary items, the less it costs you. More is better!

  3. Initial Meeting, Quotes and Estimates
At this point we'll discuss your web site, then we will deliver a time/cost quote estimation based upon what we have discussed up
to this point. Once an estimate is delivered, all add on services/work and after thoughts are additional work and will be billed accordingly.

  4. Contract and Deposit
Both client and developer sign a contract and a deposit is due before starting any work. Usually, a 50% deposit is required, but in some cases more or less will be required depending on hosting costs and any other issues. One contact person from your company is assigned to be the only contact point regarding the web site This alleviates the "too many cooks" problems that can easily arise if more than one person is communicating with us regarding development of your web site At any time please contact us about any concerns, questions or comments you have about your project.

  5. Select an ISP (Internet Service Provider) and get your service set up with them.

  6. Register your domain name. We can handle this if you would like us to do so.

  7. Mockup Sites
We will put together some design concepts for your company to critique and discuss. At this point we're trying to narrow down exactly what you're looking for. Your feedback is essential in the web design process. Feed back can be given via E-mail.

  8. Site Architecture
Navigation is one of the most important parts of your site. Site architecture is established at this point to insure your visitors don't get lost on your site! We use text links, graphic menus and buttons with rollovers to accomplish this.

  9. Working with Materials
Re-sizing photos, photo optimization, color sampling and similar tasks are all done during this phase of the Web design process.

  10. Establishing Project Design / Look & Feel
Based on your feedback from the mockup site(s) a design is established and used for your Web site.

  11. Establishing Layout Of Site
Based on your feedback from the mockup site(s) a layout is established and is applied to your Web site.

  12. Home Page
Starting with your home page, we start building your Web site. After this part is completed and approved we move on!

  13. Secondary Pages
The secondary pages are now worked on until completion.

  14. Web Site Completion and Debugging
A thorough check of the entire web site will be done before the site becomes live. Some of the things we check are the links on your site, loading time, browser compatibility, and spelling.

  15. Sign-off
At this point it is important for you to reread all the text on the entire site to see if it makes sense. Once you have looked over your web site and we have made any final changes that you have requested, payment must be made in full.

  16. The site goes "Live"
Your site is published for the world to see!

  17. Marketing and Promoting your web site
Organizations often overlook the benefits of promotion and marketing their web site. Proper promotion and marketing plays a major role in the response and business you will receive from your web site. After all, why have a web site if no one can find it or ever looks at it. Please read over the "Website Marketing" page on our web site.

  18. Changes/modifications
It is important to regularly update your web site with new information. If you keep your web site fresh visitors will be more likely to return.

Where do I get information & graphics for my web site?

Write the content yourself or hire a business writer to write it for you. You may also use information that you have written permission to use. Have your web designer create original graphics and/or obtain the proper permissions to photos and/or graphics.

Who owns the copyright to my web site?

The designer owns the site design copyright during the building of the web site Upon final payment all copyrights remain the property of their
respective owners. E.g. If we were to include certain graphics on your web site, it does not grant you permission to use them. You must clear all copyright issues before you provide us with anything. We are not responsible for copyright violations on a client's web site If something isn't yours, make sure you get approval to use it.

What is a domain name?

A domain name is a unique name that points to an Internet web address. Registered domain names are unique - once registered the name is yours for at least one year. No one else can use the domain name. Domain names are not case sensitive, and are available with several different suffixes, some of the more popular being .com and .on.ca (the latter shows that you are based in Canada, but don't worry, web sites ending in this can be seen from all over the world).

Why should I have a domain name?

A domain name is you or your companies identity in cyberspace. Domain names are unique, so once registered it's yours and yours alone. A good domain name can in itself help to draw countless visitors to your Web site If you are a business setting up a Web site a good domain name is essential to help portray a professional image.

How much does a domain name cost?

webyou.ca can register a .COM, .ORG, .NET or .CA domain name for you at a cost of $50.00 Cdn. This fee would reserve your selection (if available) for one year. You are able to continue to reserve your domain name for future years as long as this is done before your year is complete.
You will also be paying hosting fees to a company that will store your web site files and allow them to be accessed by anyone who types in your web site address.

How do I get a registered domain name?

There are three ways of doing this.

  1. Have your web designer register your domain for you.

  2. Have your ISP register you domain name.

  3. Register your domain name yourself.

  4. First search for the domain name you would like, to see if it is already taken. This can be done by visiting http://www.domainsatcost.ca. You can then follow the on screen procedures to register your domain.

What should I ask for when I get my web site Developed?

You don't have to know a lot about the Internet to have a well designed web site created for you. We do our best to help clients understand the Internet and how it works. If you would like a web site for your business and you are not sure what to ask for, it is best to begin with discussing how your business operates, who your target audience is, and what your goals are from a web site. We will discuss with you what the best web solutions are for your business.

Can you put a lot of animation on my site?

There are all sorts of great and fun gimmicks to build into a web site, but we don't recommend it. Although it may look "cool" they really slow down page loading. You can have the most beautiful page or site on the Internet, but it will be useless if no one waits for it to load.Remember that people have come to your web site for information, not necessarily to see bouncing, waving, running, flashing things that distracts from the content and possibly from the message you are trying to convey.

What is an online brochure?

For many organization's it is more cost effective to develop an online brochure which people can access through the Internet as opposed to having as printed materials. An online brochure allows for a larger target market having access to your organization's information.

Why should I know how many people access my web site?

Knowing how many people access your web site can be a selling feature if you ever plan to have advertisers pay to advertise on your web site. It can also indicate the number of visitors who go to specific areas of your site and conversely which areas are not visited as often.

How can I get traffic through the my web site?

There are several factors that affect the number of visits you get to your web site. They range from simple web marketing techniques to complex site coding. weB yoU provides web marketing services to increase the number of visits to your web site, and we also provide development services to regularly maintain your site or to give it a facelift. To have a web you consultant review your web site, please e-mail us and we will contact you shortly.

How can I get people to visit my web site again?

Getting people back to your web site once they have left is one of the three key web marketing tactics. There are different ways of approaching this issue such as developing an e-mail database of your clients and associates and using a mass e-mail to inform them of new content on your site. One of the most important ways of getting users to visit your site regularly is keeping your site content "fresh".

How do we make alterations to our web site?

Alterations can be arranged by e-mailing or faxing the information. We will make these changes on a per hourly basis.
